Look
The colorful fish are named after the large red spot that glows at the base of the tail. The bodies are transparent or yellowish with a black and neon yellow longitudinal streak down the midline.
Posture recommendation
In their homeland, the animals live in slow-flowing or stagnant, well-vegetated waters. One light current and dense border planting in the aquarium comes closest to that. Because the fish like it semi-shady like, floating plants with large leaves are appropriate. They cover that Space for swimming. One cover prevents the animals from jumping out of the tank.
Do the animals stress, their colors fade. This can happen when moving to a new tank. Once they have settled in after a few days, they shine in their old glory.
gender differences
The males have a slimmer body shape. In the mating season, they shine in intense colors.
breed
If your own offspring should succeed, a separate breeding tank necessary. The animals are spawn robber. The tank should be darkened and contain densely planted areas. The bottom is covered with coarse gravel or glass marbles. This has the advantage that the parents cannot reach and eat the eggs. Alternatively, a spawning grid serves the same purpose.
One or two females are put in, after 1 to 2 days a male joins them. High-quality live food promotes the willingness to spawn. They love courtship between the plants. The fish usually spawn early in the morning. As free spawners the females drop the eggs on the ground.
After that, the parents should be taken out of the rearing tank.
The tiny larvae hatch after 20 to 24 hours. The also tiny young fish are with tiny live food such as paramecia or other infusoria. They grow up quickly. If they are larger, artemia nauplii or powdered food are used.
socialization
Redtail rasbora can be well socialized with other small, peaceful fish. Larger shrimp as roommates are also possible. Small shrimp or young shrimp could be on the redstart’s menu.
Crabs are not recommended, they regard the small fish as prey and eat them.
