A. hongsloi look like A. macmasteri but are not as robust. If the keeping conditions are right, A. hongsloi is easy to care for and breed.
maintenance errors, e.g. B. high nitrate or low oxygen, easily lead to problems.
gender differences
The male is easy to recognize by its magnificent coloring and finnage. It has the extended dorsal, caudal, and anal fins typical of the Apistogramma family. Its throat is colored golden yellow. The female is much smaller and less conspicuous.
Behave
The Red Line Apistotramma is a very interesting small cichlid from the upper and middle Orinoco regions. There it lives in smaller tributaries, which often have extreme water values, because the water comes from the surrounding primeval forests and thus brings higher proportions of tannins and other acids from the soil. For this reason it is important to keep the PH value below 6 if possible and the total hardness should be 1 to 8° DH.
Basically, the red line Apistogramma is a peaceful bottom dweller that wants to inhabit a cave. Half a coconut shell or an upside-down flower pot is ideal for this. The male will take up a territory within a radius of about 20 cm, in which they will not tolerate any other fish. The smaller attacks to defend the territory are not dangerous for other bottom dwellers such as mailed catfish.
breed
If the male is looking for a partner, here is the reason why you should keep at least 2 females in the tank: not every female is ready to mate. They will hide, which is why the aquarium should have shelter and hiding places for the females. So it should be a “well structured” tank. If the mating in the cave was successful, the male leaves it to eat, otherwise not anymore. In the coconut he will constantly fan the eggs, which are now hanging from the ceiling, with fresh water. After about 3 days the larvae will hatch and the male will lead them around the tank. In the first few days they feed on the protozoa and parameciums that can be found in the substrate. Later you can feed Artemia larvae.
socialization
Ideally, the red line Apistogramma should be kept in a species tank with a corresponding design of the floor and the vegetation. You can add smaller tetra species that also tolerate these water values, for example neon tetras or blood tetras. Armored catfish are well suited because they also ensure the cleanliness of the bottom.
difficulty level advanced. Due to the demands on the water quality and the setup of the tank, it is more of a fish for advanced fishers. A solid knowledge of water chemistry is a prerequisite.
