Look

This growing cancer is because of his colourfulness popular. The body is blue, the scissor legs have partially orange joints. The carapace is covered with whitish to yellow spots. The name is given by the red scissor bubble. She only shows up in adult males and is a clear feature for gender differentiation. Juveniles can be distinguished by their gonopods. They are on the fifth pair of legs in males and on the third pair in females.

Only with the onset of sexual maturity do the strong colors form. The Young crabs are colored more inconspicuously.

Posture recommendation

Although the animals are mainly active in the twilight and at night, they can often be observed during the day once they have settled in.

Your aquarium should varied with many hiding places be set up.

Since the red shrimp likes to dig, are sturdy, hardy plants to choose, an alternative are floating plants. Soft plants could be nibbled by them.

The crabs are tolerant of water hardness. Important is clear water with high oxygen content. This can be achieved with an air stone, an oxidizer or by raising the outlet of the filter so that the water splashes into the pool.

breed

The young crabs become sexually mature at the age of 6 months. After mating, the females carry 300 to 800 eggs under their abdomen. By fanning them, they provide oxygen-rich water. After 6 weeks the finished young crabs hatch.

The boys are immediately after hatching. They like to hide among floating plants and feed on plankton there. Unfortunately the boys cannibalistic among themselves, in addition the parent animals pursue them. Offer the offspring perforated bricks, ceramic rolls or autumn leaves to hide.

Alternatively, it can make sense to place young animals in a separate tank.

adolescents Juvenile crabs need more protein in their food than adult specimens. This speeds up their development.

socialization

Basically, the crabs suitable for a community aquarium.

Adult red shrimp can easily live in a tank with small shrimp. Amano shrimp or Neocaridina have proven themselves. Likewise with larger fish that are in the middle or upper range. The species is often kept with cichlids from Lake Malawi or other larger perch. Fish with large fins or slow-moving fish can occasionally be eaten. There are character differences between individuals.

Juveniles will deplete the shrimp stock in the tank if their diet does not contain enough protein.
