parrotfish, Red parrot cichlidare a hybrid Breeding, ie a cross between different species of cichlids, which at least comes very close to breeding.
Tort breeds are breeding animals that are no longer viable, or that have been bred to lack body parts or have been altered in such a way that they can no longer be used for normal purposes. Cruel breeds may not be traded in Germany.
However, fish are not consistently taken into account in this regard in the Animal Welfare Act. In addition, many official veterinarians are not familiar with fish, so that such fish can be traded.
Parrotfish look like completely disfigured goldfish. In nature, the species would not mate and the young would by no means be viable. Even the animals that are bred are often not able to reproduce.
They’re so crippled they can’t even close their mouths. They cannot eat every food and cannot defend themselves against other fish. They have a severely curved spine that compresses the internal organs into a rather spherical, short area.
It is not clear which species were used for breeding. Breeders do not disclose the species. The magazine «Akwarium Terrarium», issue 5/6 1999 from Moscow states that it is a cross between Cichlasoma labiatum and Cichlasoma citronellum.
Sven O. Kullander suspected in a mailing list that Cichlasoma nigrofasciatus was also crossed. He sharply condemns these artificially created animals. When Kullander saw the animals in a pet shop in Sweden, he initially believed in genetic engineering and therefore wanted to bring about an immediate import ban because Swedish laws are very strict in this regard.
The animals first caught the eye of Cher Chan, editor of Taiwanese magazine AquaLifeMagazine, in 1986. In Taiwan, probably 3-4 breeders can breed these hybrids. Accordingly, Amphilophus citrinellus was crossed there with Vieja synspilus.
Species such as B. Heros severus and Herichthys cyanoguttatus.
According to other assumptions, parrot fish are a cripple breed of the lemon cichlid and not a hybrid. After that, crippled animals were born by chance, which were further bred with.
Such mutations can be caused by chance, by irradiation of the parents or germ cells, or by chemicals. If such a mutation has occurred, it can also be bred further. However, parrot fish are said not to have been created by radioactive irradiation.
Red Parrots are capable of producing a clutch, but no larvae should have hatched yet. However, it is reported that a Red Parrot in the aquarium has successfully spawned with Herichthys carpinte.
Also in sea water there is a species called parrotfish. These are beautifully colored animals that can probably be kept well in sea water. But they feed mainly on hard corals. They break off the coral with strong toothed ridges and chew through it. The end product is fine, white coral sand.
Because corals are very hard, the fish’s teeth wear down a lot and grow back accordingly quickly. If animals in the aquarium are fed with the usual food, the teeth grow much faster than they wear down.
Growing acopora coral to feed parrotfish is impractical.
