Origin

The white-lined loricariid is a very attractive freshwater fish that can also be kept well by beginners with some previous experience. The fish, which was only presented to the public at a trade fair in 1996, originally comes from Brazil. Details are not known. Supposedly it comes from the Rio Iriri, but it could never be proven there.

Researchers rather assume that it comes from the lower area of the Rio Xingù and that its discoverer wanted to keep the actual location secret. The fish owes its L number, which is assigned to unidentified armored catfish, to the unclear circumstances of its origin.

The 12 to a maximum of 15 centimeters long body of the loricariid catfish is elongated and strongly flattened on the underside. There are bone shields on the sides of the body. On the underside is the mouth, which is designed into a suction disc with which the fish can hold on to the bottom in fast-flowing waters. The fish bears a pattern of dark, almost black, irregularly shaped bands on an almost white background. The fins are also colored accordingly. Each copy has its very own, typical band pattern.

gender differences

Externally, it is difficult to distinguish male and female specimens of the ornamental line catfish. Male animals have a slightly broader head and therefore appear a bit bulkier than the females, who in turn are a little fuller at the waist.

breed

Linen loricariids are cave breeders. The males are responsible for brood care; they guard and care for the eggs until the young hatch and swim freely.

Breeding is quite easy in the home aquarium or in a special breeding tank. First, there should be a suitable cave – or tube. Lowering the pH value and water hardness, setting the temperature to 30 degrees, frequent water changes and increased currents simulate the beginning of the rainy season, which is also the time for reproduction.

socialization

Linen loricariids can be kept in pairs or as a larger group. When kept as a pair, the aquarium should hold at least 100 liters of water and be at least one meter long. When kept in groups, correspondingly larger tanks are required.

Loricariidae are peaceful animals and can therefore easily be socialized with other peaceful fish. Living together with shrimp or snails is also no problem.

Posture recommendation

The water temperature should be between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius. The pH should be from 6 to 7.5, and the hardness from 0 to 15 degrees. All loricariids need very clean, clear and oxygen-rich water with a certain current. The water should be low in nitrate and nitrite-free, so frequent water changes are recommended.

Silver-lined loricariids live mainly on the aquarium floor. This should be equipped with fine gravel and sand. The animals like to hide. Appropriate facilities (caves, tubes, roots, cairns) are required. There should also be shady vegetation. In general, it should not be too bright in the aquarium. The ornamental line catfish is active at dusk and at night.

With good care, he can live up to 15 years.

food

They are omnivores. This is especially true for young animals, but they mainly like plant food and therefore also eat soft plants. Adult animals, on the other hand, hardly eat any plant-based food. They prefer mussel and fish meat, mosquito larvae, glow worms and dry and frozen food. The feed is picked up from the ground.
