Look

Depending on the growth conditions, the knobbed water calyx can reach a size of 20 to 70 centimeters and is a rhizome-forming plant. The petioles of this species are up to 25 centimeters long, followed by leaves that are up to 50 centimeters long and 4 centimeters wide. The leaves of Cryptocoryone crispatula are arranged in a rosette and are uniformly green in colour. The leaf blades of the plant can be reddish to bronze in color, adding these hues to the aquarium. The knobbed leaves are particularly striking for this species, from which the knobbed water goblet also got its name. Cryptocoryone crispatula is best planted in the middle or background of the aquarium, as otherwise it could look out of place due to its size.

distribution

The origin of the knobbed water goblet is in southern Thailand. Due to the mountains in this region, the water found there is very calcareous, which is why this plant prefers hard water. In its original area of origin as well as in other parts of Southeast Asia with calcareous waters, Cryptocoryone crispatula can be found in shallow water or along the banks of standing or slowly flowing waters such as rivers, lakes, ponds, ditches or ponds. When the water level drops, Cryptocoryone crispatula begins to bloom.

husbandry conditions

The knobbed water goblet is relatively easy to cultivate in the aquarium and is therefore also well suited for aquarium beginners. Like most species from the water calyx family, Cryptocoryone crispatula also needs some acclimatization time after planting before growth begins, which is why you should not be unsettled by the initially stagnant growth of the plant.

The knobbed water calyx feels most comfortable in medium-hard to very hard water with a temperature between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius, whereby the light requirements of this plant are low to medium-high. The better the plant is illuminated, the more pronounced the napping of the leaf blades, which gives it its name. Cryptocoryone crispatula grows particularly well on nutrient-rich substrates with a high proportion of iron, nitrate and phosphate. Due to its robustness, the plant can even be cared for in the garden pond in summer. Outside of their natural environment, however, it is very difficult to get the pimpled water cup to flower.

particularities

The plant is resistant to very hard water.
