Nixweed is an aquarium plant that not only makes a visual impression, but also maintains the balance in the underwater world. This genus of aquatic plants is also ideal for beginners, as it requires little maintenance and practically reproduces itself.

Look
Depending on the species, the plant body can develop in different colors. This can be presented in light and dark green, but can also be white or reddish. They have a slender stem and are annual aquatic plants. Their leaves are almost whorled. The leaf edges are serrated and have between 5 and 100 teeth per side.
This structure results in an intriguing green complex. Due to the fast growth of the plant, the optical appearance of the aquarium can be easily changed with it – but this involves a lot of effort in pruning during the course of growth.
distribution
Nixweed is primarily native to South America, but some species can also be spotted in areas of North America and Eurasia. Worldwide there are 40 different species of the genus Nixenkräuter, or Najas, which differ both in shape and color.
You can propagate by breaking off parts of the plant or sprout from seeds in the spring. The seeds can be stored for up to 4 years and germinate in the dark – which is why they are classified as dark germs. Since mermaid herbs can also occur in a water depth of up to 3m in the wild, fertilization takes place exclusively under water.
husbandry conditions
The plants can grow and be cultivated in both fresh and brackish water. Whether rooted in the ground or floating, the mostly green plant thrives in both varieties. Najas are extremely tolerant of changes in light and temperature. 5° – 33°C do not pose any problems for the frogbite family.
A little sunlight is enough for them, but these all-rounders can also cope with increased exposure to the sun. Their full potential of color and growth will be reached at temperatures between 18° – 27°C and a medium to high light exposure.
particularities
Nothing herbs are ideal in combination with young shrimp and fish. Their branched and numerous shoots offer the young animals protection and serve as a source of food. Due to the long shoots and their rapid growth rate, the plants clean the water of any pollutants.
Nix herbs are said to have a hunger for nutrients, which can have positive effects on life in the aquarium. This creates the environmental conditions that algae do not welcome. This side effect should appeal to some aquarists.
