Roundworms (nematodes) are found in all animal species worldwide. Some species have complicated reproduction, requiring one or two intermediate hosts. For some worm species, fish are the definitive hosts where adult worms are found. For other worm species, fish are only the intermediate hosts, with larval stages of the worms found in the organs or tissues of the fish.
Threadworms of these species can only reproduce if all the necessary hosts are cared for in the aquarium.
Unfortunately, aquarium fish are also attacked by nematodes, which reproduce without an intermediate host. Since an internal infestation is naturally difficult to detect, these species can often spread without being noticed at an early stage.
Nematodes infest all internal organs of the affected fish species and damage them until the affected organs finally stop functioning. Threadworms can e.g. B. cause swim bladder problems. Normally, the fish weakened by nematodes also develop other diseases, so that the final cause of death is often not recognized.
