The needle weed is a typical pond plant and belongs to the genus of succulents. As the name suggests, this is due to the thick leaves of the plant. These are small and needle-shaped, but grow very close together.

The dense green makes it well suited for the Planting of pond edges. It forms a kind of carpet just above the water surface. This contributes to a beautiful picture of your own pond.

In Germany, needle herb has not been widespread for that long, only since the 1980s has this plant also been found in our bodies of water. In the meantime, however, it has become very popular, mainly because it is very easy to care for.

purchase

Coniferous plants can be bought in garden shops or hardware stores and are planted in the spring. The plant will then shore area of the pond and can spread there.

The herb does not grow very tall, which is why it should be planted in the shallow water zone. Otherwise, flowers and leaves cannot break through the water surface. Nevertheless, a depth of up to 50 centimeters possible. The needle weed is relatively flexible and makes its way to the water surface.

As already mentioned in the profile, the conifer needs sun. Partial shade is fine too, but full shade is not good for the plant. If planted deeper, the plant may not receive enough light. However, the needle weed needs this in order to be able to spread.

attitude and care

As soon as the coniferous herb has been planted, it actually needs at all no further care more. The plant can take care of itself with the nutrients from water and air and is not dependent on human intervention.

Of course, the roots must always be kept wet, but this should not be a problem around the pond. If the shoots spread too much, they should cut back regularly become. But this is the only thing the gardener has to do.

Needleweed itself is actually less conspicuous and is probably still a popular pond plant. The flowers of the plant are not particularly large, but the green breaks up the monotonous surface of the water and is therefore ideal as a Decoration for the domestic pond. In addition, needle weed is easy to care for, as discussed in the previous section.

requirements for the pond

Needleweed is a very dense and branchy plant, which spreads both below and above the water surface of the pond. It serves as a species groundcoveronly for the pond.

The individual strands can be up to 25 centimeters long and branch out among themselves. The pond itself does not have to meet any major requirements, apart from a mostly sunny location already mentioned.

The needle weed is even conducive to the health of the pond, by giving it the oxygen it needs. This process takes place all by itself once the herb has been planted.

propagation

The best method of propagation is to use the coniferous weed to share in the spring. However, the plant also spreads quite quickly on its own, which is why manual propagation is not always the desired effect.

If it spreads too much and takes over other pond plants, the needle weed even has to be cut back.

wintering

Needleweed is one mostly annual plants, which is why hibernation is not possible. It was originally intended as a perennial plant, but its potency diminishes relatively quickly with age.

However, the shoots can be multiplied quickly, which is why replanting is usually not a problem. Before that, however, the remains of the previous needle weed should be removed so that no residues remain in the pond.
