Posture recommendation

The marbled gourami is a peaceful fellow who likes to be in wait for insects in the upper aquarium area. As a breeding form of the blue threadfish, it is undemanding in terms of nutrition. He takes dry food as well as frozen food (red/white mosquito larvae, daphnia).

socialization

It can easily be socialized with all peaceful species of tetra and barbel. A minimum of 2 animals, a couple, is recommended. Males look for a territory that they defend against other males. Distinguishing the sexes is difficult. A larger and longer rear fin may indicate that it is a male. Bottom fish such as armored catfish or other species that primarily live on the bottom are of no interest to the marbled gouramis.

They should not be kept together with scalars. Both species have elongated pectoral fins and tend to devour each other’s fins. These include the purple head and the five-belted barbel, which also like to tug and nibble at such pectoral fins.

Other thread/maze fish should not be added, otherwise territorial conflicts will quickly arise over the best places in the dense plant thicket.

The original form comes from the so-called «Golden Triangle», the area where Laos, Cambodia and Thailand meet. They live in calm or stagnant water. Their water can be low in oxygen on hot days. As real labyrinth fish, they are well-armed with their additional breathing organ.

pelvic structure

The aquarium should be densely planted, as an almost closed water surface promotes the well-being of the marbled gourami. Then the animals can eat the flake food more easily or the frozen food floating on the surface. The aquarium should definitely be closed at the top, as the marbled gouramis like to jump. Therefore, a high cover should offer a few cm of space above.

If the basic needs of the fish are met in the aquarium, breeding is easy. The mating behavior is interesting as with all gourami. The male builds a nest of slime bubbles that he repeatedly shows to the courted female. When the time comes, the two roll into each other and turn under the nest. The female ejects the eggs and the male ejects his sperm. After the mating act, the female is driven away and should be removed from a smaller aquarium if possible. Or you remove the nest of foam. If the nest is left in the aquarium, the larvae will hatch after about 3 days. The newly hatched larvae are fed with Artemia nauplii.

With a size of up to 15 cm, the marbled gourami is an imposing animal that is a common fish with its calm lifestyle and beautiful markings. The animals can reach an age of up to 8 years.

Other cultivated forms of the blue threadfish are the orange threadfish and the gold threadfish.
