Look
The green to red leaves grow from a rosette. They are sword-shaped and slightly wavy. The stem is up to 10 centimeters long. This is followed by a sheet that is 25 centimeters long and 5 centimeters wide. The white flowers appear underwater or when the stems reach the water surface. They remind you of an orchid.
distribution
Barclaya grows below the surface of flowing water. You can often find her in her native countries.
husbandry conditions
The stately plant requires an aquarium with a capacity of at least 250 liters. If the Barclaya is kept in a small pot, it will stay small longer.
It does not make high demands on the nutrients. If she gets soil fertilizer, she will grow big faster.
propagation
New plants develop on the underside of the tuber, which can be separated. In addition, the Barclaya forms seeds from which new plants can easily be grown. The plant flowers easily and is self-pollinating. The seed pod ripens from the center of the flower. Inside are the brown, prickly seeds in a gelatinous mass. Before it opens and scatters the seeds in the aquarium, it should be cut off. The seeds freed from the gelatinous mass are placed in a snail-free aquarium with calm fish and a sandy bottom. The seeds also germinate in a bowl of water. When the new plants are 6 to 10 centimeters tall, you can plant them in their final location.
