Keeping L204 catfish
L 204, Panaque spec. «Peru», originate from the upper Ucayali in Peru. They have fine, yellow transverse lines on an anthracite background. The fins have broad, sharp bands. With older, larger animals, the sharp line pattern is lost and becomes more blurred and unsightly. Especially in the males. Nevertheless, they are very beautiful animals. When they get bigger, they develop beautiful, very long tail fins.
They can grow up to about 20 centimeters. This makes them one of the rather small Panaque species. They grow quite slowly, but the aquarium should be at least 100 centimeters long.
Males have a longer caudal peduncle, but it is lower. The head is lower in males.
L 204 are quite easy to hold. Soft and acidic water is beneficial. But the demands are not very high. The water must not be too soft and acidic. Carbonate hardness 4 to 6, total hardness 5 to 10 and a pH between 6.5 and 7.2 are suitable. Temperatures around 25° to 27° are well tolerated.
They need enough retreats to avoid other fish. Individually kept animals seem mostly peaceful. Animals kept in groups of three were quite aggressive towards each other and towards other catfish, L 134. In another case, L 204 only became aggressive when their territorial boundaries were crossed by conspecifics.
Like all Panaque, L 204 absolutely need wood roots. They are outright raspers. As a result, they also produce a lot of dirt in the tank. However, no dirt that heavily pollutes the water, but optical dirt. Therefore, it should be filtered sufficiently. Flow and decoration should be arranged so that the rasps do not accumulate where they are best seen.
L 204 are nocturnalbut sometimes come out of their hiding places to feed.
Almost everything is eaten, e.g. B. vegetables, frozen and tablet food. They are not strictly herbivores, but will eat away the top layer of leaves when rasping away algae.
The females lay eggs.
