Basic information about Nothobranchius

In general, one species tank or several tanks make sense for Nothobranchius.

Nothobranchius are seasonal fish. Such species of fish are also called annual species. The animals spawn in a spawning substrate, e.g. B. peat, ab. The spawning substrate must then lie dry for a few weeks or months.

After this time, cold water is poured onto the substrate. If everything is fine, the young fish will hatch.

If the substrate is dried again and watered again after a while, many young fish usually hatch again.

Dry times vary from species to species.

Nothobranchius eggersi are not suitable for beginners. Nothobranchius palmqvisti are more suitable for beginners.

Feed for young fish

Young Nothobranchius palmqvisti can eat Artemia immediately.

Nothobranchius luekei are so small that they have to look for microorganisms as food in java moss and in the sludge itself. Even paramecia seem to be too big at first.

Rachov’s magnificent fundulus, Nothobranchius rachovii, does not get very old. The service life is 1/2 to a maximum of 1 year.

Rachovii are not simple Nothobranchius.

Disadvantages of Nothobranchius rachovii:

  • short lifespan, other Nothobranchius live up to twice as long.
  • The eggs must be stored for at least 6 and up to 10 months before the eggs are developed.
  • The young fish are somewhat sensitive when reared.
A plastic tray with peat can be placed in a corner of the aquarium for spawning. The bowl can be closed with a lid with a hole. The fish find the hole as an entrance and spawn in the bowl. Such shells are also called nesting boxes. Without a lid, the peat will be thrown out of the bowl when the fish are rooting.

The eggs can remain in the water for 2 to 4 weeks after they are laid, after which a drying break is definitely required. If the spawn is not drained, the eggs will die.

The peat can be dried on a newspaper. If the peat is loose, you can look for the eggs in it. Even if no eggs are found, the drying break should be observed.
