Do you have to replace leaking aquariums?

It is a horror for every aquarium owner when water suddenly runs along the pane or a puddle has formed under the tank. Where does the water come from and why is it there? This question should be clarified as soon as possible. If the pool is leaking, this can have many negative consequences.

Swollen furniture and floors, dying fish and plants or other unsightly consequences that you would like to avoid. Sometimes the cause is quite harmless. Has anyone played at the pool or tried to catch a fish? Was the water changed and you accidentally spilled it? Was the pool filled too high or is the air vent set incorrectly? However, if nothing of the sort has happened, you have to look for and find the leaking spot in the aquarium quickly.

However, a leaky aquarium does not necessarily have to be replaced. It can also be sealed. However, sealing is associated with high costs and time, so it usually makes more sense to simply buy a new pool. Since fish and plants, as well as even the substrate, can be taken over, the costs are then kept within limits.

What is the best way to seal an aquarium?

If you own a particularly beautiful or rare aquarium, you may not want to simply exchange it. To seal an aquarium you need aquarium silicone. This is available in every specialist shop for animals and aquaristics, but also in hardware stores. However, it should be ensured that the silicone is suitable for the aquarium or under water.
Sealing takes some time and patience. First you look for the leaking spot.

This is shown, for example, by dried traces of water on the outer wall of the pool. These are usually somewhat rough and whitish, caused by the lime in the water. Fresh drops of water on the outside also indicate that water is escaping. Once you have found the leak, you have to drain the water level far enough for the spot to dry. This is best done overnight. If the hole is very deep in the tank, the aquarium will need to be replaced, at least temporarily, as the fish will not be able to survive. Once the area has dried, it must be cleaned thoroughly. The old silicone is removed with a knife and the area is cleaned again. Then you can apply the new silicone. The packaging tells you how long the silicone then has to dry. If enough time has passed, you can fill the pool again.
