Colorful world of guppies

Guppy are commercially available in a variety of colors and shapes. Depending on the breeding form, there are deviations in color and fin shape.

Food for guppies

Algae and microorganisms sit on the plants.

These often as basic food.

It then looks like the plants are eating.

However, the leaves of the plants are not damaged.

color changes

The color can partially change up to an age of about 4 months. Therefore, only fully grown guppies should be used for breeding.

Guppies as beginner fish

Suitable for beginners – critical consideration?

They are not suitable for beginners, because

  • They are often sensitive
  • The offspring are often crippled or short-lived
  • They can only be kept if there are at least 2 females for every male
  • They breed too fast
  • Beginners do not know how to avoid too many offspring in guppies
  • Beginners usually have no opportunity to give away excess offspring
  • They can only be kept if only males are kept
  • Guppies parents do not usually eat their children. Should this nevertheless be the case, the affected animal should be sorted out when breeding
  • Other livebearers are more recommended, e.g. B. Platys or Swordtails

They are suitable for beginners because

  • normal specimens, ie wild forms and the like, are robust
  • only high-breed guppies are demanding
  • only high-breed guppies can be sensitive due to overbreeding
  • usually they are not susceptible to disease
  • Offspring of normal specimens (not outbred) do not get any malformations
  • Males do not kill females
  • it is a great introduction to aquaristics if offspring appear quickly and easily
  • Because the parents also eat the young, only a few young survive
Other livebearers, e.g. B. Platys or Swordtails, are more suitable for beginners, because
  • other livebearers are more robust
  • the offspring of other livebearers have fewer deformities than the offspring of guppies
Other livebearers, e.g. B. Platys or Swordtails, are not better suited for beginners, because
  • Swordtail males are often gruff
  • Swordtails are not suitable for beginners because they need to be kept in an aquarium of at least 160 liters
  • Swordtails are not suitable for beginners because only one male and several females can be kept together
  • Swordtails and platys also breed quickly

Because the males can harass the females so much that the females through stress eventually dieit makes sense to keep 2 to 4 females for every male.

Guppies reproduce very quickly. If the juveniles are not eaten by other fish, an aquarium will quickly become too crowded. As a result, diseases can occur in the entire stock. For this reason it can make sense to only keep males.

However, it is controversial whether it is species-appropriate if only males are kept. However, it is not known whether the males suffer when there are no females in the aquarium.

Basically, beginners should keep guppies that resemble the wild forms, but not wild caught ones. Specimens bred by hobby breeders are also recommended. Such animals are often found at fish markets run by aquarium clubs.

When buying new, you should not buy too many copies. The females are often already pregnant at the dealer’s and after a short time there are more fish in the aquarium than is actually sensible.

Some aquarists put predators in the aquarium so that the stock does not become too large – multiplies too quickly. Aquariums for beginners are often relatively small. Cymbals are typically 60 cm long. The tank size severely limits the choice of predators.

Apparently clawed frogs have proven themselves. One or two dwarf clawed frogs can be placed in a 60 cm aquarium.

Be careful with the often recommended dwarf cichlids. Most, if not all, species are not suitable for beginners. They often require soft water and larger aquariums.

They can also cause a great deal of unrest due to their territorial and breeding behavior. Apistogramma borelli fit in a 60 tank. They get along with a total hardness GH of 12°, a carbonate hardness KH of 9° and a pH value of 7.5.

age and life expectancy

They will be 2 to 3 years old.

The exact life expectancy depends on the keeping conditions and the breeding form. guppies with large fins, e.g. e.g. fantail and triangle, age faster with short fins, e.g. B. round fin and sword types. Because they have to exert more effort, they become decrepit faster.

In the husbandry conditions z. B. temperature and flow a role. Livebearers are sometimes reared to sexual maturity faster at elevated temperatures. These animals then have a shorter life expectancy. These offspring are called steam breeds.

For the females, the frequency and number of litters plays a further role. Sometimes the females only have the strength for 2 to 3 births and do not survive the next birth.

Long-tailed guppies are about 1 year old. The age record for a normal short-tailed guppy is said to be 9 years.
