This killifish is native to Zanzibar and belongs to the egg-laying toothcarps. Its habitat there are streams and ponds.
gender differences
The male is larger and red transverse stripes appear on a blue ground colour. The caudal fin is entirely red in color with a black border, while the dorsal fin is striped in turquoise red with a white border. The anal fin has red spots and stripes. Males behave very territorially among themselves and can also react aggressively.
The female looks inconspicuous and has a blue to brown basic color.
breed
This works best in a separate rearing tank. A spawning substrate made of coconut or peat fibers should be introduced here. A mixture of both substrates is also possible. This is where the female lays her eggs. The peculiarity is that in the wild the brood survives a dry season of about six months. This must also be taken into account in the aquarium. After laying the eggs, the substrate with the brood contained in it is taken out of the tank and preferably dried on newspaper until only a little moisture is left.
Now the spawning substrate is packed in a bag for about four weeks so that it does not dry out completely. Here the further development of the eggs takes place, which can be easily observed. When the embryos visibly completely fill the eggs, the entire substrate including the brood can be poured back into a small aquarium. The water should be stale and about 22°C warm. Only a small height is necessary. After about 24 hours, the young have hatched and can move to a larger rearing tank.
Here they are fed with Artemia nauplii. The remaining spawning substrate is dried again and stored in a bag. After the waiting period of four weeks described above, it can be poured again.
socialization
A socialization should only be made with other killifish. A small group of one male and two females is recommended, or two such trios if the tank is large enough. Unfortunately, shrimp and crabs cannot be kept with Günther’s killifish either, as they are either eaten by Nothobranchios guentheri or they themselves regard the killifish as food. So only a species aquarium with other killifish that have similar maintenance parameters comes into question.
Aquarium
If there should be a substrate, because this is not absolutely necessary, it should consist of dark sand. The planting can be done with anubias, java fern or similar simple plants. Floating plants are also excellent. There should also be hiding places and retreats in the form of roots and caves. Very good water hygiene is of the utmost importance and a water change should take place once a week.
