- flake food
- live food
- frozen food
- Freeze-dried feed
- granules
Angelfish should be given at least 50% frozen food. Feeding only dry food is too one-sided.
Freeze-dried food is very nutritious because the water is removed and it contains more nutrients in a comparable amount than flake food.

It is best to feed live food 2-4 times a month.
So that angelfish always have live food, they can e.g. B. with 4 swordtails, a male and 3 females, are kept together. 3x females, 1x male). Swordtails are very beautiful and fertile fish that, after a while, have young all the time.
Tubifex may only be fed in small amounts. Otherwise, angelfish stuff themselves so full that they can no longer digest the tubifex. The scalars then come in.
From time to time, angelfish also require plant food. If they don’t get any other plant-based food, they may also eat plants, e.g. B. Mayaca.
plant food:
- hygroph. diff
- Duckweed
- Vegetables
- Sliced cucumbers
- Sliced zucchini
- Peas
- Cauliflower
- thread algae
Above all, it should be fed in a varied manner.

Some think that the angelfish are uncomfortable because they don’t swim that fast. But in our aquarium, they let themselves be carried along by the current.
Angelfish often spit out new types of food first. It is usually sufficient if only the new food is given for several days in a row. The hunger then becomes so great that the new food is eaten and they get used to it.
A good way to introduce fish to new food is to go without feeding for a few days and then mix the old food with the new food. The proportion of the new feed is then increased step by step. If the new food is still not accepted, stop feeding again for 2 days and then start all over again. If the food cannot be mixed, the new food is given before the actual feeding, when the angelfish are still really hungry.
Some foods are never eaten by some fish. However, most fish can be accustomed to many types of food.
How much do scalars eat?
Angelfish often overeat. They can also die from too much food. They often overeat on frozen food and mosquito larvae. If an angelfish gets a slightly bigger belly, has eaten a lot lately and has no other symptoms of illness, it should not be given any food for a few days.
How is a mouth spasm treated in angelfish?
Angelfish can turn their mouths outwards when they want to eat larger chunks of food. In rare cases, the mouth does not turn back. Affected animals may have problems feeding.
In most cases, the mouth will return to its normal position on its own. If this is not the case after several days, the only thing you can do is try to catch the animal and gently push its mouth back with your hand.
However, scalars are defensive fish, especially adult, large scalars. They are not so easy to catch, let alone pick them up.
In one case, the affected animal was pushed into a corner of the aquarium with a net. In its attempt to escape, the scalar bumped its snout against the pane, after which its mouth was turned back again.
These methods are not exactly gentle and result in pure stress for the animals concerned. It would be even worse to do nothing.
