The so-called Endler’s Guppy, Poecilia wingei, is a wild form from Venezuela and streams in Trinidad. The German name derives from the biologist John Endler who researched what factors affect the coloration of Endler’s guppies.

It is a double sword guppy, where the upper sword is significantly smaller. The caudal fin of the males is round. Only the drawing on it looks like a double sword. The swords are colored strong. The Endlers Guppy has a dark bar on the sides.

Like many wild forms, Endler’s guppy is smaller than the guppies that are commonly sold. Females are about 4 cm long from the head to the tip of the caudal fin, the males about 3 cm.

The offspring correspond exactly to the parents. The range of variation of the offspring is much smaller than with «normal» guppies. In contrast to wild guppies, heredity is almost pure.

Endler’s guppy is so closely related to the guppy that they breed. High breed guppies with the typical markings of Endler’s guppy have already been exhibited at high breed guppy shows. As with the regular guppy, breeding is very simple.

In the case of wild forms, no selection should be made as a matter of principle. Only outliers in shape, color or fins are sorted out. Otherwise, the young should be kept together and nature should be allowed to take its course. Even if a daughter reproduces with a father or a brother with a sister, the gene pool remains completely intact. Inbreeding is not to be feared.

What Endler’s guppies eat

Live food is preferred, e.g. B. Cyclops, Artemia, small water fleas, white bloodworms and grindal. Flake food, finely ground flake rearing food, food tablets and frozen food are also taken. Some Endlers may be picky and only take live foods such as Cyclops and Artemia.

In which water can Endler’s guppies be kept?

Endler’s guppies can be slowly acclimated to almost any water. However, they seem to be more comfortable in the water they were raised in.
If the carbonate hardness is too low, e.g. B. under 14, according to several reports, whitish coatings and frayed fins occur. The cause is apparently an infestation with bacteria, which must be treated with antibiotics. According to these reports, the symptoms disappear without treatment when the carbonate hardness is increased.
According to other reports, Endler’s guppies do well in water with a total hardness of 7 – 12 dGH, a carbonate hardness of up to 3° dKH and a pH of 6.8 – 7.5. These animals became ill when transferred to harder water.
