The clawed frog is divided into the large clawed frog and the dwarf clawed frog. The large clawed frog is also called the apothecary’s frog because it secretes a secretion that is used for pregnancy tests. Dwarf clawed frogs are common aquarium inhabitants. There are both wild caught and bred ones. Mating dwarf clawed frogs is considered difficult because they are often disturbed by fish in the tank. They should therefore only be kept with peaceful fish. Otherwise there is also the danger that the dwarf clawed frogs will jump out of the tank. Dwarf clawed frogs only grow to 3 to 4 cm.
gender differences
Females become sexually mature faster than males. They can be recognized by the three lobes on the cloaca. The females grow larger than the males. Mating lasts for several days, with the males croaking loudly. Females have a brighter voice than males. The young breathe through gills and after about 30 days become frogs with lung respiration.
socialization
Dwarf clawed frogs can be socialized well. They are predators and also eat smaller fish. Peaceful and large fish are good company for the frogs. They also harmonize well with shrimp. When feeding in the common tank, care should be taken to ensure that sufficient food is available. There are fish that gobble up their food quickly, so the dwarf clawed frogs often fall short and can starve.
