The blackberry tetra or Hyphessobrycon wadai originally comes from South America. The colorful freshwater fish lives there mainly in the upper reaches of the Rio Tapajó and looks for rivers with clear water. The schooling fish lives in larger groups. A moderate flow rate, sandy subsoil and vegetation with hiding places characterize the natural habitat of the blackberry tetra.

The fish owes its name to its purple colour, which varies in intensity. Like all tetra species, the blackberry tetra also has the typical adipose fin as well as long dorsal and anal fins. The fins shimmer transparently and have a reddish-orange coloring at the edges.

gender differences

At first glance, it is not easy to tell male and female blackberry tetras apart. They are similar in their basic color, an olive-ocher and violet, as well as in their physique.

During the mating season, the female begins to show a clear approach to spawning, the male shows a clear red coloring on the fins and tail. In addition, the dorsal fin of males is usually slightly more pointed than that of females. By patiently observing the animals, you can often tell from their behavior whether it is a male or a female animal.

breed

Since the bramble tetra is one of the relatively newly discovered fish for keeping in aquariums, there are not yet sufficient reports on well-founded statements on captive breeding. However, it is known that the blackberry tetras are free spawners acts. Previous reports on breeding attempts illustrate a difficult course and only recommend breeding to experienced aquarium owners.

socialization

The blackberry tetra is considered to be more peaceful school fish. It can therefore easily be kept in a community tank with other social fish. They should be about the same size and correspond to the habits of the blackberry tetra.
