Attitude of Black Mollys

Black Mollys are originally a black breed of the blackfin fish, Poecilia sphenops. Poecilia latipinna and Poecilia velifera were later crossed into this breeding form. This resulted in the different fin shapes.

There are three different breeds of Black Mollys

  • Poecilia sphenops with a small, rounded dorsal fin
  • Poecilia latipinna with an elongated dorsal fin
  • Poecilia velifera with a sail fin

Because Black Mollys are breeding forms of other Mollys, there are always young among the offspring who are not colored black. Mollys colored in this way are also called piebald Mollys. So that the black form is not endangered, such animals should not be used for further breeding.

Black Mollys mate with closely related fish species, e.g. B. other molly species. Black Molly and Gold Molly hatchlings are initially black but may later change color. First they get z. B. zebra-like wide yellow horizontal stripes until they turn almost completely light yellow, so that only a few black spots can be seen on the caudal fins. Gold or silver colored areas can also be created.

Black mollies and sailfins can result in spotted mollies with larger dorsal fins.

A discoloration of Black Mollys or the offspring does not necessarily have to be attributed to an illness.
