Can you run an aquarium without technology?
The question repeatedly arises among aquarists as to whether a tank can do without all the technology. The reasons for this question are very different. Whether you want to start an experiment, don’t want to waste space in the tank for a filter or just want to save energy are just a few of the reasons. In fact, it is quite possible for many aquarium inhabitants to do without the filter.
In order for this to work, however, a few important rules must be observed. For example, the aquarium should have a very fine substrate, not too many inhabitants and many plants. Shrimp are great for such a project.
Reasons for a pool without technology:
- for optical reasons
- missing socket
- to save energy
- to be more like nature
- better for the plants
- the filter destroys many nutrients
- less algae
- the substrate can also serve as a filter
Requirements for an aquarium without technology:
- not too much stock in the tank
- a high substrate, at least 5 cm
- very fine substrate of sand or gravel up to 3 mm
- many plants
- generous and regular water changes
- regular mulm suction on the ground
How often should you change the water in an aquarium without a filter?
Frequent water changes in an aquarium without a filter are particularly important. The substrate serves as filter material in a technology-free tank. It should consist of sand or very fine gravel and the sludge should be removed with a hose once a week. A water change of just over half of the water makes sense. The more often you change the water, the higher the chance that the pool can run well without a filter.
The plants and the shrimp contribute to the good water parameters in the aquarium. The shrimp clean the bottom of plant debris and the plants fight against nitrite occurring in the water. In order to keep the values constant, it is advisable to feed them very carefully. If there is an oversupply of food, the water can quickly tip over. In a well-heated room, the pool does not even need a heater. However, it must be said that without a filter, the temperature in the pool can vary greatly. However, this does not bother residents such as shrimp.
