▷ Aquarium external filter too loud | Steady hum – hum

JBL filter with insulation

Is your external filter too loud or is it buzzing all the time? Then you can find ways to get back to a “normal” noise level here.

First of all: The fact that external filters are not completely silent is absolute normal. However, it should not go beyond minimal noise.

Clatter – mechanical objects

If you hear a rattling or jingling of mechanical objects, this is probably the so-called impeller. You have to check this and see if it is defective or just something wrong. If there is a defect, you cannot avoid an exchange. Also look at the guarantee or warranty of your filter – it may offer a free replacement as part of this

air in the filter

Especially in the run-in phase or a generally new filter, there are air bubbles in the filter. These must be removed, as they can be responsible for the noise.

Some filters offer a so-called jump starter to blow the air out of the filter. If this is not available, we recommend tilting the filter back and forth slightly. The air would then have to be released and discharged into the pool via the water outlet.

Filter buzzes – insulation

If your filter continues to make noise or buzzes constantly, you have two options:

  • Place a towel under the filter so that it does not come into direct contact with the base cabinet.
  • Insulates the base cabinet with foam specially designed to dampen noise, available from hardware stores or from Amazon (€5-20 depending on size).

Tip: Use the foam directly with adhesive film, this avoids problems with adhesion to the base cabinet.
