Origin
The original home of the L 403 or Anapú catfish is the Rio Anapú in Brazil. It is a clear water river to the Rio do Pará in Brazil. Import from the habitat is prohibited. With us he is exclusively from the offspring available.
Look
With its unusual appearance, the loricariid is a real gem among ornamental fish. The shape of its body is teardrop and somewhat flat. The basic color is dark brown. A light color runs over the whole body and the fins stripe drawing, reminiscent of the camouflage color of a tiger. The eyes and fins are quite large. The males increasingly have small bristles (odontodes) on their abdomen.
attitude
The species-appropriate care of L 403 succeeds in one Group of 4 or more catfish. Depending on the size of the group, the pool measures at least 80 cm edge length. The aquarium is not too brightly lit. The water quality is warm, soft to medium-hard and slightly acidic (tap water). A temperature between 26 and 30° Celsius, a total hardness of 0 to 14° dGH and a pH between 6 and 7 is ideal.
The pleco tends to Territory formation and requires a well-structured tank. The facility consists of various retreats made of stone structures, clay pipes and soft root wood. The root wood must always be present in the tank, as the catfish urgently needs the dietary fibers it contains for proper digestion. He scrapes this Wood and eats the fibers.
So that the small part-vegetarian spares the plants in the tank, the planting consists of robust and bitter-tasting varieties such as anubia, cryptocorynes or java ferns. A blanket of floating plants provides shade and protection from excessive exposure to light. The soil substrate is gudgeons suitable and consists entirely of sand or fine, round-grained gravel.
food
The omnivore is well supplied with a mixed diet of animals and plants. Animal food should be fed more sparingly, as the catfish species tends to become obese and can then become ill.
The high-quality food consists of special tablet or chip food for catfish, vegetable chips and frozen food. Don’t forget the soft Wood from e.g. bog pine root or mangrove.
gender differences
When young, male and female catfish are indistinguishable. Females only appear when they are older smaller and fuller than the male and have fewer thorns. The genital papillae the males are rather pointed, but the females are larger.
breeding and rearing
The offspring of cave breeders is difficult. When reproducing, the female deposits the spawn in burrows. The males do brood care. So that the eggs get enough oxygen, they are fanned with the caudal fin.
socialization
The peaceful loricariid can be excellent with loricariids and armored catfish and others peaceful fishing socialize
Shrimp from 4 to 6 cm in size, mussels and snails with similar water parameters are also good roommates.
