Katya Echazarreta will become the first Mexican woman to travel to space

Katya Echazarreta is a young Mexican woman who, at just 26 years old, will become the first woman of her nationality to travel into space, as part of a manned mission by the Blue Origin space agency, owned by Jeff Bezos. Katya has dedicated her life to science and in fact, she has a very active career in social networks where she analyzes the events of various television series from a scientific perspective.

Echazarreta has become a role model for women, as she has managed to make her way in the STEAM world (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics), despite the fact that there is a male predominance in this sector. She studied electrical engineering at UCLA and has a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. But this was only the beginning of her career, because after her studies, Katya spent four years working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). There she became fully involved with space science and collaborated on a total of five aerospace missions.

The young woman originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, has become a science enthusiast, despite the fact that on several occasions she experienced firsthand the gender gap in the scientific circle. However, her efforts have paid off for her and the non-profit organization, Space for Humanity (S4H), has decided to sponsor her seat on a special Blue Origin mission.

“I am honored to represent not only Space for Humanity in this mission, but also all the girls and women who dream of achieving something bigger, those who maybe just need an extra push or an example of someone who looks like or sounds like them, to encourage you to take the next step towards your dream,” Katya said upon receiving the news.

With this, she will become the first Mexican woman to reach space. She will board the twenty-first flight of the spacecraft New Shepard (NS-21), of the Blue Origin space agency. This will be the fifth manned mission for the company founded by former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

“Katya will be the first Mexican by birth and the youngest American by naturalization to visit space and will fly as part of the Citizen Astronaut Program sponsored by Space for Humanity (S4H),” Blue Origin said.

Katya Echazarreta was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco and moved to the United States at the age of 7. In that country, she graduated as an engineer and participated in five NASA missions, including the famous one that sent the Perseverance rover to Mars.

There is still no date for the mission into space where the young woman will occupy a seat, however, Blue Origin said that it will be announced soon.
