- White vinegar
- Metal sponge
- Glass jars
- Brush
- Black tea
- Hot water or ambient temperature
- Sandpaper
- Wax in pasta or polyurethane
- Plastic gloves
- Rags
Step 1: Make the vinegar solution
Start by pouring vinegar into a glass jar and fill it halfway. Crushing the metal sponge and add it to the jar. Next, Let the metal sponge and vinegar stay in the jar without covering for at least 24 hours. If you let it rest for a longer time, a darker appearance will be created (which is fine if it is your preference), but do not let oxide form or end an orange spot. The metal sponge will dissolve in the vinegar after one day.
Step 2: Eliminate the old finish
If the wood surface is already painted or finished, you will have to remove the original finish with sandpaper, otherwise, the solution will not adhere to the wood. You can do this while you wait that the vinegar solution ends and it is easy to learn to repaint a table or other furniture. To remove the layer of paint, start with an 80 grain sandpaper, sanding along the wood vein. As the upper paint layers are removed, it passes to an average grain sandpaper (150 works well) and ends with a fine sand of 220.
Step 3: Mix tea
Once the vinegar solution is ready, Mix hot water and tea in another glass jar. When you apply both mixtures to a piece of wood, tea tannins will react with the metal and vinegar sponge solution to create a darker finish.
Step 4: Paint on tea
Use the brush, the cloth or the dry brush to apply the tea to the wood. Let the tea dry and then apply the vinegar solution to the wood. The aging process will continue as it is drying, so you can wait before applying a second layer of vinegar.
Step 5: Protect the finish
When you are satisfied with your freshly aged wood, protect the finish with a pasta or polyurethane finish wax.
TINCION METHOD 2: Commercial dye to age the wood
Commercial dyes are a simple way to quickly age any wood. For this tutorial you will need:
- Sandpaper
- Brush
- Hot water or ambient temperature
- Wax in pasta or polyurethane
- Plastic gloves
- Wood dye
- Rags
Step 1: sanding the wood
Start by using an orbital sander in the wood to Eliminate any lining and create a smooth surface. Start with a thick sandpaper (grain 80), then review with an average grain sandpaper (grain 120), before finishing with a fine sand of grain 220.
Step 2: Brush with water
If you use a normal wood dye to get the aged wood appearance, Start applying water to wood. This allows wood to absorb less number of dye.
Step 3: Add the dye
Let the wood dry for a few seconds and then apply the dye with a brush. I immediately clean the excess dye with a cloth. Let the wood dry and Repeat the operation if necessary. Finish with wax in pasta or polyurethane. If you use a dye specifically designed to create an aging appearance, follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
