Keeping lemon tetras

© Peggy Fuhrmann

Lemon tetras are robust and easy to care for shoal fish that can be socialized well with many other fish species.

Lemon tetras prefer the middle water layers. They are compatible with each other and with other fish species. The swarm should include at least 5 pieces. They form small territories of about 5 to 10 cm in diameter. As with other tetras, these territories are not permanent, but are constantly shifting and re-forming.

During their courtship and display rituals, they swim rapidly towards one another, stand parallel to one another a few centimeters apart, spread their fins wide and make jerky movements as if trying to hit one another with their tail fins. But they don’t touch each other. There are no serious arguments with injuries. At least not if there is enough swimming space to dodge. (Source Lemonsalmler)

Water parameters for lemon tetras

According to personal experience, suitable water parameters:

KH 7, GH 9, pH 7 KH 3, GH 5, pH 7

With a lower hardness (KH 3), the lemon tetras show stronger colors and are livelier. Under these conditions, even in a well-stocked community tank, young can come up from time to time. To do this, the tank must have suitable hiding places, e.g. B. through dense vegetation and cushions of java moss.

Food for lemon tetras

Lemon tetras eat practically any food, e.g. e.g.:

Better and vitamin-rich feed causes stronger colors.

Lemon tetra breeding

Young lemon tetras

With suitable water conditions, lemon tetras reproduce practically by themselves if there are enough hiding places for the young. In cushions of java moss, the young also find enough microorganisms to feed them, so they don’t necessarily have to be fed extra. A stock can also be maintained in the community tank, which is self-sustaining for many years. However, if as many young animals as possible are to grow up, a targeted approach to spawning in a separate tank is recommended.

Lemon tetras multiply in my 240 liter community aquarium at KH 4 and GH 5 without any special effort. Due to the dense plant growth in the tank, young ones keep coming through, despite some predators, so that the population remains stable or increases slightly.

At first the young prefer to hide in Java moss and only come out in the dark. Young that are too careless, however, are quickly eaten. By regulating plant growth, the rate of propagation can be indirectly influenced.
