Not every tip listed here is suitable for removing every type of algae on every item. Some algae are particularly stubborn, some objects are particularly sensitive. Therefore, you have to choose the most suitable method from the suggested alternatives and try it out carefully first.
Removal of algae from plants
- Algae can be brushed off hard plant leaves with a soft toothbrush.
- To remove algae, gently rub the plant leaves between your thumb and finger.

The tips listed should be carried out outside the aquarium and are generally not suitable for being carried out in the aquarium.
In order to remove algae from hard-to-reach places, the objects are broken down into their individual components as far as possible.
CO2 pinball machines etc. can also be cleaned well in this way.
Some items are a bit difficult to disassemble, but with careful use of suitable tools (screwdrivers) as leverage, even stiff pinball parts can be disassembled.
Care must be taken to position the lever in such a way that no brackets etc. break off.
Mechanical removal
- Stuck algae on insensitive objects, such as heating and internal filters, can be removed with a household sponge.
- Stuck algae on items that scratch easily, like CO2 flippers, can be brushed off with a toothbrush.
- Algae on stones, sturdy roots and objects can be removed with a pressure washer. Use a cloth to protect against scratches and fix the object to be cleaned, e.g. B. with a rubber on a cobblestone. There is a risk of damage, especially with roots.
removal by heat
- For objects, e.g. B. made of plastic, which do not tolerate boiling, it often helps to rinse the object with hot water for about 2 minutes. After about 2 days, the algae will turn brown and will fall off within the next few weeks.
- Items that can withstand intense heat can be boiled.
- Small items can be packed in a fabric bag or sock and washed in the washing machine at up to 60 degrees.
- Items that are too large for pots can be heated in the oven.
- Algae on stones, sturdy roots and objects can be removed with a steam jet at a gas station or car wash. Use a cloth to protect against scratches and fix the object to be cleaned, e.g. B. with a rubber on a cobblestone. There is a risk of damage, especially with roots.
Chemical removal
- Algae on items can be removed with Grapefruit Seed Extract from the health food store. Then rinse the item well with water.
- Chlorine-based household cleaners such as Chlorix/Klorix, Domestos etc. from the supermarket remove algae. The dose given for Klorix is 250 ml in 5 liters of water, with an exposure time of 10 to 15 minutes. Afterwards, be sure to rinse the cleaned objects well with clear water. Caution: Your hands will smell of chlorine for a while afterwards.
- Corega tabs for cleaning dentures can also be used. Again, rinse well with clear water.
- After treatment with concentrated hydrochloric acid, algae die and dissolve. Before use, you must familiarize yourself with the handling of chemical agents. Safety goggles, gloves and running water to wash off in case drops get on the skin are required as a minimum. Be sure to rinse thoroughly with clear water.
- After treatment with diluted hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), algae die and dissolve. Before using H2O2, one must become familiar with the handling of chemical agents. Safety goggles, gloves and running water to wash off in case drops get on the skin are required as a minimum. Be sure to rinse thoroughly with clear water.
